CAUGHT IN THE ACT burst onto the stage of the Hickory Community Theater on May 21, 1981 after nine months of feverish work.

Feverish is the only word to accurately describe this concoction of song and dance that was no more than a single tune at the Kay Awards banquet in August of 1980. This song, “Caught in the Act,” was the first hint to the public that something unusual was brewing at HCT.

Actually, the brewing had begun well before then. In May of 1980, Charles Jeffers, the executive director of the HCT, had contacted a Lenoir pianist/composer concerning the possibility of writing a musical revue for local production. When an Atlanta-based actor/writer added his talents to the project in November of 1980, the brew began to simmer. And, when eleven of the Piedmont’s finest local talents were tossed in, the brew boiled, reared back, exploded into the hottest show to hit the HCT boards in many a season.

Cooking metaphors aside, “Caught” was so well received that an unprecedented second run of the show was set for August/September of 1981. Such is the love of a good show by the people of Western North Carolina; and it’s because of that, once again we’re all caught in the act.

CAUGHT IN THE ACT was originally produced by the Hickory Community Theater, Hickory, N.C., the best-balanced city in the Tarheel State.

Production directed by Charles E. Jeffers.
Choreographed by Jane Sigmon.
Set designed by Ray Mills.
